CREASE

Soft and sculptural shapes formed from thick folds. CREASE turns upholstery upside down. Rather than building a shape that is tightly upholstered, Toogood explored the process back to front. Could the shape of a sofa be created starting with the cover rather than the frame? How can a fold be soft and squashy? CREASE was inspired by two dimensional nets, flat-pack and the act of folding paper.

The CREASE sofa, chair and lounge chair celebrate purposefully imperfect fold lines. Contrasting slot seams amplify each fold panel – creating a spontaneous, wobbling geometry. Following these soft and generous lines – the CREASE table and side table are shaped by cutting and folding a sheet of steel as if it were a piece of paper. This metal origami is then covered in thick leather, giving the tables a bit of squish. With its rounded, folded feet – CREASE has a playful, animated look.

CREASE pairs an unfussy, spontaneous and refined elegance with Meritalia’s iconic pop-modernism and playful freedom.
